'97 - '98 Varsity Ice Hockey Game Summaries

DATE: December 11, 1997
OPPONENT: Bergen Catholic (Away)

The Pirates stunned the Crusaders of Bergen Catholic by the score of 10-1. Brandon Doria had one goal and five assists. Zach Hatcher, Dave Murphy, and Dan Percella each had two goals. Justin Liebman, Ed DeMartino, and Steve Jeffers each had one goal apiece. Jeff Skowronski stopped 11 out of 12 shots.


DATE: December 19, 1997
OPPONENT: St. Joe's Metuchen (Away)

Dan Percella had four goals and two assists to lead Seton Hall Prep to a 10-0 victory. Joe Fernandez racked up two goals, and Brandon Doria had one goal and one assist. John Dibble tallied four assists while Chris Swon had three. Kevin Cordovano and E.J. Solimine both scored their first goal as a Pirate. Jeff Skowronski gets credited for the shutout making 11 saves.

Seton Hall Prep crushed Bergen Catholic 11-1. Ed DeMartino and Justin Liebman each scored two goals. Zach Hatcher, Brandon Doria, Joe Fernandez, and Conor McNally each had a goal and an assist. Joe Tonzola made 12 saves for the Pirates.

OPPONENT: St. Joe's Metuchen (Home)

Dan Percella and Joe Fernandez powered Seton Hall, each had two goals. Chris Swon had a goal and three assists. Zach Hatcher and Ed Caldwell also had a goal apiece.

OPPONENT: Bishop Eustace (Away)

Seton Hall Prep topped Bishop Eustace 6-2. Dan Percella had two goals and one assist for Seton Hall. Chris Swon, Conor McNally, Gary Tashjian, and E.J. Solimine each had a goal. Brandon Doria had two extraordinary assists. Jeff Skowronski made 12 saves in net.


DATE: January 19, 1998
OPPONENT: St. Joe's Montvale (Away)

Seton Hall Prep proved that they were the stronger team against St. Joe's Montvale. The Pirates outshot St. Joe's 40-15. Joe Tonzola was spectacular in net making some marvelous saves. For the Hall, Chris Swon had two goals, Brandon Doria and Dan Percella had the other goals. Joe Fernandez had two assists for Seton Hall.

OPPONENT: Bayonne (Away)

Seton Hall Prep trampled over Bayonne by the final score of 12-2. Zach Hatcher had 4 goals and 2 assists, Brandon Doria had 3 goals and 4 assists, and Brady Crooks had 2 goals and 3 assists. The Pirates outshot the Bees 43-9. Also, Senior Jon Grabowski scored his first varsity goal.

OPPONENT: Bishop Eustace (Home)

The Pirates of Seton Hall Prep leveled the No. 4 team in the state, Bishop Eustace, 10-0. Ed DeMartino and Joe Fernandez each had two goals. Zach Hatcher, Brady Crooks, Brandon Doria, Dan Percella, Chris Swon, and E.J. Solimine also managed to score a goal for Seton Hall. It only took Seton Hall two periods to put this one away as they won by the 10-goal mercy rule.

DATE: January 31, 1998
OPPONENT: Delbarton (Home)

The Pirates overthrew the No. 2 team in the state by the final of 3-0. Seton Hall Prep shut out their arch rival with Joe Tonzola in net making 22 sparkling saves. Zach Hatcher pitched in with two goals and Brandon Doria scored the final goal for Seton Hall.

DATE: February 4, 1998
OPPONENT: Princeton Day School (Away)

Seton Hall Prep blanked the No. 4 team in the state 5-0. All five goals for Seton Hall were contributed by a different player. Justin Liebman, Brady Crooks, Chris Swon, Gary Tashjian, and Conor McNally all pitched in with goals. Dan Percella had two assists, and Joe Tonzola stopped 13 shots to tally his sixth shutout.

OPPONENT: Notre Dame (Connecticut High School Classic)

Seton Hall Prep really showed that they are not just a powerhouse in New Jersey, but also abroad. Zach Hatcher led the charge against Notre Dame of West Haven, Connecticut with two goals and one assist. Dan Percella and Brady Crooks also added a goal apiece for the Pirates. Chris Swon and Brandon Doria pitched in with an assist each.

DATE: February 23, 1998
OPPONENT: Bergen Catholic (Home - Gordon Cup Quarterfinals)

The Pirates breezed through the Quarterfinals of the Gordon Cup by the score of 5-0 over Bergen Catholic. Brandon Doria had two goals and two assists to lead Seton Hall to victory. John Dibble, Zach Hatcher, and Chris Swon also netted a goal apiece.

DATE: February 25, 1998
OPPONENT: Christian Brothers Academy (Home - Gordon Cup Semifinals)

Gary Tashjian and Chris Swon both had a goal and two assists leading Seton Hall Prep to a win over Christian Brothers Academy. Brandon Doria and Dave Murphy added a goal apiece. Brady Crooks, Zach Hatcher, Conor McNally, and Dan Percella all had an assist each. The final score was 4-1 in favor of Seton Hall.

DATE: March 14, 1998
OPPONENT: Hudson Catholic (State Tournament Parochial Semifinals at Mennen Arena)

Zach Hatcher led the Pirates with a hat trick and Brady Crooks and Brandon Doria each had a goal and an assist. Junior Ed Caldwell handed out two assists. Joe Tonzola stopped 10 shots in net to advance Seton Hall to the State Tournament Parochial Finals. Conor McNally and Steve Jeffers pitched in with a goal apiece to lift Seton Hall Prep over Hudson Catholic 8-1.

DATE: March 20, 1998
OPPONENT: Delbarton (State Tournament Parochial Finals at Continental Airlines Arena)

Chris Swon and Zach Hatcher got Seton Hall Prep on the board very quickly with two goals in the first two minutes of the game. Swon's goal was assisted by Dan Percella and Gary Tashjian while Hatcher's goal was assisted by Brady Crooks and Brandon Doria. Doria also sealed the game by putting in an empty net goal in the last minute of the game. Joe Tonzola stopped 14 shots in net for Seton Hall. The final score was 3-1 with the Pirates coming out on top.

DATE: March 23, 1998
OPPONENT: Brick (State Tournament Overall Finals at Continental Airlines Arena)

The Pirates won their first state crown in the history of the school by beating Brick 3-2. Dan Percella got the first goal for Seton Hall followed by Brandon Doria and Ed Caldwell. Caldwell's goal was the game winning goal that snapped a 2-2 tie with little time left in the third period. Jeff Skowronski was strong in net and preserved the win for Seton Hall Prep.
